WHEREAS, June th is observed as Flag Day each year to commemorate the adoption of the United States Flag by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777; and
WHEREAS, 2026 is the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and is the 249th anniversary of our nation's adoption of the United States Flag; and
WHEREAS, The first national observance of Flag Day took place 100 years after the original resolution, on June 14, 1877; and
WHEREAS, President Woodrow Wilson issued a 1916 proclamation for the national observance of Flag Day on the th of June; and
WHEREAS, On August 3, 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman; and
WHEREAS, The Congress, by Joint Resolution, requested that the President issue an annual proclamation calling for its observance and for the display of the flag of the United States on all Federal Government buildings; and
WHEREAS, The Congress also requested by a Joint Resolution, approved on June 9, 1966, that the President annually issue a proclamation designating the week in which June occurs as "National Flag Week" and called upon all citizens of the United States to display the flag during the week; and
WHEREAS, The custom of issuing a Presidential Proclamation to hoist the flag with pride continues to this day; and
WHEREAS, The American Flag embodies the enduring spirit of our country, symbolizes the principles for which our Republic stands, and acts as a beacon of freedom, hope, and opportunity wherever it is flown; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby recognizes and celebrates June 14, 2026, as "National Flag Day" in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the National Flag Day Foundation.
